The refurbishment of the pool and roof area of a Grade II* listed building.

The Pioneer Health Centre is listed for it’s historic place in the development of Health Care being seen as a precursor for much of the National Health Service to be established after the war, and for it’s architecture (1934-35) by Sir E. Owen Williams, one of the leading Modernist Architects in Britain in the 1930’s.

In 1997 consents were granted to convert the building from by then council operated leisure centre into private flats. But the central pool, with most of it’s original features including the diving boards, glazed roof and long viewing windows along the pool side, were maintained for the inhabitant’s communal use. 

We worked with the Client, Historic England, 20th Century Society and Southwark Conservation officers on the refurbishment of these pool areas including a replacement Heritage glazed roof.
