Streatham stables community centre

Streatham, London

This capital project provided much needed non-commercial space on the high street, in the outbuildings and courtyard behind the White Lion licensed live music venue. As a collaborative project between the GLA and Lambeth Council,  Streatham Stables is a good example of a local project delivered by local people.

The former facilities were cramped, only accessible through the licensed premises and lacked separate facilities for children.
We gave the Streatham Stables project a presence on the high street with its own street entrance, a revamped courtyard space, separate WC facilities from the licensed venue, and much improved wheelchair and child friendly access.
A new slatted timber wall with matching undulating ceiling connects the new street entrance with the courtyard and resolves some seating, bin storage and a new stairwell to the basement.
The graffiti / mural painted wall opposite, is to provide a strong gesture of colour and texture to guide people in, and an opportunity for locals to get their brushes and cans out (in an organized manner!).
