Refurbishment and extension of a detached house.

The ground floor of the existing house was divided into smaller, relatively dark rooms, and didn’t cater for a growing young family.

The new development consists of a single story ground floor extension to the side of the existing house. This allowed for the existing ground floor space to be re-organised to become a light open plan space with natural daylight streaming in from both sides.

The enlarged openings to the existing rear facade create a strong connection with the terrace and garden. The simple linear extension provides a new light and spacious entrance & hallway, which connects to the new garage, utilities and the sunken multifunctional room to the rear.

The dark stained cedar cladding of the new extension was extended around the two enlarged rear openings of the existing house, to help integrate the new volume with the existing, and together with the matching terrace decking create a courtyard space connecting all ground floor spaces with each other and the garden.
The new extension follows the existing party wall and is partly submerged into the rear garden. The roof of the new volume slopes down at the rear and received green sedum to reinforce its connection with the garden.

Apart from providing a new entrance, the new volume offers an array of differently shaped, sized and day-lit spaces, adding to the spatial interest of the ground floor area.
